Mark Rosenberg discusses global health, noncommunicable diseases

I think the biggest fight we have on our hands is fatalism. We can take steps to prevent [NCDs] in our generation and in our children’s generation.

To make things happen, it’s going to take collaboration, and that ain’t easy. As I always say, a coalition is just like a marriage: It’s very easy to get into it, it’s very hard to make it work.

We have been focused on the wrong thing. We think, here you have an epidemic caused by eating too much or drinking too much or smoking too much, and our industries and our government are focused on pills. It’s not a deficiency of pills. It’s excess access to the things that we eat, that we drink and that we smoke.
