Environmentalists celebrate victory at Mattawoman Creek
Environmental activists who stopped Charles County from building a road through the Mattawoman Creek watershed hope that their victory will spawn other efforts to save Chesapeake Bay.

A tundra swan and mallard ducks take flight on Mattawoman Creek in Indian Head. Mattawoman Creek has been called the Eden of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Most of the fish found in the bay are conceived and reared in a shallow neck of the creek upstream. Charles County wanted to build a connecting highway through the watershed, but environmentalists succeeded in heading off those plans.
