A new book studies dog play and what it can reveal about dogs’ emotional lives and the evolution of human emotions.
An Australian sheepdog nips a brindle Shar-Pei mix at a dog park in Arlington, Va. on May 1, 2014. In the new book “Citizen Canine,” author David Grimm writes about research by Marc Bekoff at the University of Colorado at Boulder, who studies dog play and whether it can reveal thaq dogs have abstract thinking, morality and a spectrum of emotions. According to Bekoff, studying dog play reveals more than the animals’ emotional lives. It could ultimately shed light on the evolution of human emotions and how we came to build a civilization based on laws and cooperation, empathy and altruism.
