A French architecture firm illustrates what the garden of the future could look like.

In this design by French architectural firm SOA Architectes, one of two in the "Mini Ferme" design, a local, urban farm is taken vertical. The design was released as part of a research study (in French) by the Laboratoire d’Urbanisme Agricole.

The concept of vertical gardening is not new. In this illustration from SOA Architectes, a vertical production farm towers over Paris in a design mock-up titled "Cactus.” The design was created to illustrate an alternate model for growing produce.

In this design, called "Urbanana," an "intensive banana farm" is squeezed inside a Haussmann-era building in Paris. The banana farm would allow for both horizontal and vertical space to grow one of the world's more popular fruits.
