US states with the biggest changes in jobless aid applications, and some reasons, at a glance

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose by 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 366,000 last week. The level is low enough to suggest hiring will continue at a modest pace.

States with the biggest decreases:

—Michigan: Down 4,157, no reason given.

—New York: Down 2,653, due to fewer layoffs in construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade and retail trade.

States with the biggest increases:

—California: Up 3,069, due to layoffs in service industries.

—Pennsylvania: Up 2,534, due to layoffs in construction, health care and social services.

—Illinois: Up 1,165, due to layoffs in construction, administrative support services and retail trade.

—Ohio: Up 1,018, no reason given.
