Open thread: Capitals at Islanders

Just hours before faceoff Coach Adam Oates said he wants to see the Capitals get fired up to play in front of rookie netminder Philipp Grubauer, who will make his first career NHL start against the Islanders Saturday afternoon.

While Grubauer hasn’t spent much time with Washington this season, defenseman Karl Alzner said he’s confident in the 21-year-old’s ability to anchor the Capitals.

“He’s good out there on the ice. It amazes me, there’s times where I feel like there’s so much to shoot at but I can never get it because he’s so fast,” Alzner said. “It’s pretty amazing the way he makes some of the saves so I think it’s going to be good.”

Faceoff: 1 p.m. Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum  | TV: CSN | Radio: 106.7

Goal: Grubauer, Holtby.

Scratches: Tom Poti, Michal Neuvirth (ill) and Aaron Volpatti.
IR: Mike Green (groin), Marcus Johansson (concussion), Jack Hillen and Brooks Laich (groin, non-roster).
