Open thread: Capitals at Canadiens

(John McDonnell/The Washington Post)

Tuesday’s game marks just the second time since the Canadiens traded him to the Dallas Stars in 2006 that Mike Ribeiro has returned to his hometown as an opponent of the team that he grew up cheering.

“It’s great to come back,” Ribeiro said. “I haven’t come back that often since I got traded it’s nice to come back to see family and friends and the fans. It’s always exciting to play here.”

In his first game back in Montreal on Feb. 21, 2012, Ribeiro recorded a goal in a 3-0 Stars win and was outspoken about how he wanted to show the Canadiens they made a mistake by trading him.

He was named first star of the game and when he was summoned from the visitors’ tunnel, Ribeiro skated around the ice at Bell Centre, saluted and then bowed to the crowd. (Check out the video here via Puck Daddy.)

Some roster notes for those who might have missed them earlier in the day: Washington will be without Martin Erat, Joel Ward and Brooks Laich Tuesday night in Montreal. In net, Michal Neuvirth will make a second straight start for the Capitals.
