Capitals issue qualifying contract offers to four non-roster RFAs

The Washington Capitals have issued qualifying contract offers to four soon-to-be restricted free agents, according to the team website, while declining to do so for three more.

Michael Latta, Edward Pasquale, Cam Schilling and Nate Schmidt all received the offers to retain their negotiating rights; Nicolas Deschamps, Brett Flemming and Peter LeBlanc will become unrestricted free agents. LeBlanc, a center, has already been announced as joining Rögle in Sweden. If any of the three Capitals reject their qualifying offers, according to CapGeek, they remain restricted free agents.

According to CapGeek’s handy qualifying offer calculator, defensemen Schmidt and Schilling had theirs valued at $874,125. Latta’s offer was $605,000 and Pasquale’s was $632,500. Pasquale’s rights were obtained via the draft for a sixth- and seventh-round pick and another seventh-rounder in 2015. The Capitals also got a sixth-rounder out of the deal, which they used to draft Minnesota high-schooler Steven Spinner.

Latta, a center, spent most of last season with Hershey, but appeared in 17 games with the Capitals. Signed as an undrafted free agent last offseason out of the University of Minnesota, Schmidt, 22, saw ice time in 29 games at the NHL level. Schilling, 25, registered 16 points in 70 games for the Bears.

If the players accept these qualifying offers, they sign a one-year deal at that value.

The deadline to extend qualifying offers is Monday at 5 p.m. Free agency officially begins Tuesday. Nine non-roster players and center Mikhail Grabovski are unrestricted free agents.
