Tom Wilson suffered ankle injury after fall, severity unknown

(Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports)

Capitals right winger Tom Wilson suffered an ankle injury during a recent fall in Ontario, the team announced Wednesday. According to a release, Wilson is currently in Toronto under evaluation from doctors, but Washington’s medical staff has been in contact.

The Capitals expect to learn the extent of Wilson’s injury within the next several days, according to an article on the team website. That same article suggests the possibility that the injury could prevent Wilson from returning before training camp or the start of the regular season, depending on the severity. The 20-year-old appeared in every game for the Capitals last season, mostly in a fourth-line role as he racked up 151 penalty minutes, which ranked seventh in the NHL.

Even with a crowded depth chart at right wing, particularly with Coach Barry Trotz’s desire to start Alex Ovechkin there, Wilson still faced an opportunity for increased ice time, and the organization has hoped he could soon become a top-six power forward. He scored three goals and handed out seven assists, but with a time-on-ice of only 7.8 minutes per 60.

“Until more is known about Wilson’s condition and long-term availability, any such plans could be put on hold,” the team’s release said. “We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about Wilson’s condition and his recovery.”

Wilson’s agent Mark Guy said he did not expect to sideline Wilson into the season, but declined to speculate because he had not yet heard back from doctors. He was unsure exactly how Wilson injured his ankle or which ankle was injured, and was uncertain whether Wilson had an MRI or X-ray.
