Capitals, Hershey add two forwards on two-way deals

After an emotional introduction of their new head coach, which happened to be an old face returning after one season away, the Hershey Bears announced two new roster additions Friday morning, bringing aboard forwards Tim Kennedy and Kris Newbury with one-way, two-year one-year, two-way deals.

Kennedy, a 28-year-old left winger with 162 games of NHL experience, was a sixth-round draft pick by the Capitals in 2005, before they quickly dealt him to the Buffalo Sabres. The return? A sixth-round pick in 2006, which Washington ultimately used to draft Mathieu Perreault. He appeared in 37 games for the Arizona (then-Phoenix) Coyotes, and has bounced around with four NHL teams. In 30 games with the Portland Pirates, a former Capitals affiliate, Kennedy scored 15 points and earned 14 penalty minutes. He was a former member of the AHL’s all-rookie team in 2008-09.

Newbury, a center, played in the final 17 regular-season games for Hershey in 2013-14, where he scored 13 points and 25 penalty minutes. Though he appeared in four games for the Flyers last season, Newbury has mostly spent his career as an AHL journeyman, logging 662 games with Hershey, Adirondack, Hartford/Connecticut, Grand Rapids, Toronto and St. John’s. Last season, Newbury reached the milestones of his 600th AHL game and 700th professional game within a two-month span.

And in the interest of tying things together, here’s the list of free-agent acquisitions for the Capitals thus far (all two-way deals via CapGeek, the rest via team announcements):
