I’ve had a lot of fun with Larry Michael over the years, picking on all manner of positive coverage he’s produced for the Redskins.
But even the team’s longtime play-by-play man and minister of propaganda has been stunned into sadness by the way this season has gone. During an interview on ESPN 980 this week, Michael used the word “mind-boggling” three times in less than a minute. This is a man whose job involves keeping his mind from getting boggled, but this season has done it.
“It’s just mind-boggling that this team hasn’t been able to put a complete game together, and I don’t know if they’ll be able to in terms of special teams the rest of the year,” he said first. “Every week it’s some negative play. You know, other teams get positive plays. You can get a momentum boost from your special teams. And it’s always a buzzkill.”
“It’s mind-boggling that as much confidence as they had at the beginning of the year….It shows you, I think you’ve got to just keep on improving your roster,” he said moments later.
“It’s mind-boggling that they haven’t been able to put a full game together,” he said seconds later. “A complete game, we haven’t seen.”
When the home team is boggling Larry Michael’s mind, you know things are going poorly.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
On his new SportsTalk 570 baseball show, Thom Loverro asked Matt Williams whether he’s been able to speak to many of his new players. (Audio here.)
“I spoke with certainly Jayson,” Williams said. “I went to his house while I was back in D.C. and spent an hour with him. That was all good. Everything’s all over as far as [that on-field dispute] goes at this point. Spent an hour with him. Talked to Adam [LaRoche]. He called me. I think he was out hunting somewhere. And I actually just talked to Ian Desmond a couple days ago, about things, about how we’re looking to run Spring Training and what we need to accomplish as a team.”
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
THE WIZARDS UNDER GRUNFELD
My pal Kevin Broom put together the Wizards’ record, by month, during the Ernie Grunfeld era. In April they play .427 basketball, which is ok. In January they play .447 basketball, which is virtually a playoff pace in the East. But in October/November, they check in at .336, their worst mark of any month. That’s a path to having casual fans check out early.
OBAMA IN COLLEGE PARK VIDEO
The ACC Digital Network grabbed just about every time Obama was shown or mentioned during Sunday night’s Maryland-Oregon State broadcast. And also, that time students held up a massive display inviting the Obama family to TerpThon.
GW IS RECEIVING VOTE(S)
John Feinstein gave his weekly weird 25th-place vote in the AP basketball poll to George Washington this week. Then the school’s athletic department put out a press release about it. It was the first time the Colonials had received a vote in the poll since the 2006-07 season. The GW women’s team is receiving more votes; enough to rank 30th in the country this week.
SAD VIDEO OF THE DAY
Lute Olson talked to Seth Davis about Gilbert Arenas, and it was sad. The longtime Arizona coach apparently has reached out to Gilbert several times in an effort to just talk about life, and Arenas doesn’t reciprocate. Olson thinks he’s too embarrassed about what happened to his career.
