Buck Showalter orders on-deck circles removed after Caleb Joseph’s scary fall

The Orioles’ 6-0 win over the Reds on Wednesday was not nearly as wacky as the Nationals’ 14-inning marathon win against the Dodgers, but it did feature at least one thing you don’t see every day.

Chasing a foul ball off the bat of Ryan Ludwick in the fifth inning, Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph slipped on the rubber on-deck circle and skidded into the camera well next to the Baltimore dugout. Joseph, who avoided injury, laughed it off and remained in the game. He even joked about it afterward.

“I’m good,” Joseph told reporters. “I’ve got some cushion in the buttocks area, as Forrest Gump would say.”

Orioles Manager Buck Showalter, who has raised concerns about the on-deck circles in front of both dugouts before, didn’t find it as amusing. (Look at him giving the on-deck circle the death stare in the photo above.)

“Buck said next year those are gone,” MASN play-by-play man Gary Thorne said after Joseph’s fall. “I bet you 10-to-1 they’re gone tomorrow. He just wants to have it implanted in the dirt.”

In fact, both on-deck circles were removed by the time the Orioles came to bat in the bottom of the inning.
