There’s a hungry young skier nipping at Lindsey Vonn’s heels, challenging the reigning overall World Cup champion.
Maze, the 29-year-old Slovenian skier, is the overall leader in World Cup standings early in the season and has come close to winning an overall crown in recent seasons. But Vonn has been standing in the way, winning four of the last five titles. This year, though, Vonn has been weakened by an intestinal illness that could open the door for Maze.
And, if that doesn’t pan out, maybe Maze could give singing a serious try. After all, her kicky song “My Way Is My Decision” has been viewed over 800,000 times on YouTube.“I’ve learned that maybe sometimes it’s better to show people who you are and what you are thinking about,” Maze told the Associated Press after last weekend’s event in Aspen, Colo. “That way, you can be more relaxed with yourself.”
Maze brings an exuberance to the slopes, turning a cartwheel after winning the giant slalom Saturday on Aspen Mountain. Her enthusiasm masks a killer instinct for skiing that, this year, may deliver results.
“It’s good motivation to hear your song, to hear your voice, to hear your words, but I’m not a singer. I’ve never even tried to sing in front of people,” she said “I’m not sure if I could do a concert. I’d rather do a concert on skis.”
Vonn, who recently started skiing again after a stomach issue that put her in a Vail hospital, will have a historical advantage this weekend when the tour heads to Lake Louise, known as Lake Lindsey for her past dominance there, for two downhill races and a super-G. Maze, though, is gunning for her.
“We are well satisfied with the course of the season, but far from the end!” Maze blogged Wednesday. “So now happily into fight and we will see how fast we will be this weekend!
“Things are very simple. You are, or you’re not!”
