Gathr provides the films, you provide the audience

Crowdfunding for moviemaking is nothing new, but what about crowdsourcing for movie-watching? That's sort of the idea behind Gathr, which blends the concepts of Kickstarter and video on demand, but on a big-screen scale.

Simply head to the Gathr Web site and check out their selection of independent films. If one strikes your fancy, you can volunteer to be the point person for bringing the film to a local movie theater, and if you can rally a certain number of people to buy tickets (the number varies according to theater size), the movie will screen for the audience.

Area resident Nicole Byrd is currently in the throes of a Gathr endeavor, and it's a race against the clock. She's trying to assemble an audience for "Girl Rising," a documentary-feature hybrid about girls trying to empower themselves through education in third-world countries. Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson and Cate Blanchett lend their voices to the film, which Los Angeles Times critic Glenn Whipp called "illuminating and ultimately hopeful, despite the horrible circumstances depicted."

Byrd logged on to Gathr and proposed some times, dates and locations; Gathr responded with a 7:30 p.m. showtime at Regal's Ballston Common theater on Thursday, Aug. 15. If 100 tickets don't sell by Thursday, the show doesn't go on. You can buy tickets to the "Girl Rising" screening on the Gathr site, which also lists other movies vying for showtimes, as well as films you can volunteer to host.
