Ice skating season is upon us

This post has been updated.

Pull out that winter coat and lace up your skates at one of these outdoor ice rinks -- or at least grab some hot chocolate while the kids skate.

Starting Wednesday, stop by the Silver Spring Ice Skating at Veterans Plaza for the rink's opening celebration. Feeling charitable? If you donate gently-used coats, new socks, or non-perishable food items, you can skate for free from 4 to 8 p.m.

Georgetown's Washington Harbour rink opens Friday at noon. The 11,800-square-foot rink (which is larger than both the rink at Rockefeller Center in New York City and the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden rink) will be open daily through March.

Also opening Friday is the Rockville Town Square ice rink. The 7,200-square-foot rink's grand reopening party from 6 to 10 p.m. will feature a meet-and-greet with Capitals alum Alan May, skating performances and more.

The popular National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden rink is scheduled to open Nov. 15. The open-air ice rink is surrounded by museums, monuments and modern art, making it a popular spot during winter weekends, with music and treats from the Pavilion Cafe.

The Pentagon Row outdoor ice skating rink is also set to open for the season Nov. 15. The rink was recently renovated and expanded, with the addition of a new fire pit to warm your cold fingers and toes. An official reopening celebration is Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Canal Park ice rink in Southeast has yet to announce an official opening date. Operators are fixing the rink after a flooding incident, which was caused by a ruptured pipe in the rink’s pump room. Fingers crossed, it should be open by mid-December.

Mid-December is also when the Lake Shaw Ice Rink is scheduled to open. The ice skating rink will be built inside the Old City Farm and Guild's amphitheater, with the plan to use proceeds to support Old City's student programs.
