Lorde will headline Preakness InfieldFest

"Royals" singer Lorde -- precisely the kind of gothy high-schooler who would find a boozy, debaucherous sporting event lame -- is set to headline the Preakness InfieldFest on May 17. The concert, announced today, will take place at Baltimore's Pimlico race track during the local jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown.

Take that in for a moment, won't you?

The newly minted Grammy winner specializes in a mellow, lo-fi sound characterized by spare electronic beats. It will make perfect sense on the club tour she's  embarking on this month (Lorde will arrive at Echostage in March for a show that sold out in seconds), but it's hard not to wonder whether "Royals" will set an upbeat mood for a sea of more than 100,000 fans.

And yet the Preakness is quickly becoming known for lining up rising pop acts, having booked Bruno Mars (2011) and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (2013) among the InfieldFest's first few years. Preakness organizers were struggling to recover from spiraling attendance after banning the infield's BYOB policy in an attempt to improve its boozy image. InfieldFest, which launched the same year, increasingly has made up the difference, featuring cream-of-the-crop pop acts that will  ensure ticketed music fans are bound for Pimlico on race day.

Tickets for this year's InfieldFest are $60 to $140, and are available through Ticketfly.
