G Sandwich is coming to Nationals Park

Mike Isabella has had a home run of a year. Since July, he's opened Kapnos and G Sandwich, and announced plans for outposts of Kapnos in Arlington and Graffiato in Richmond. On deck later this month: A G Sandwich at Nationals Park, located on the main concourse behind section 136 in right field.

WASHINGTON - Feb. 11, 2014. The cauliflower sandiwch at G, by Mike Isabella, features shishito peppers, roasted cauliflower, a red-pepper based romesco sauce and an array of herbs on a hoagie-like bun. The dish is one of Weekend's 40 Essential Eats for 2014. Vegetarian baseball fans, rejoice: The cauliflower sub is on the menu at Nats Park. (Lavanya Ramanathan/The Washington Post)

The abbreviated ballpark menu will consist of four of G's top sellers: the chicken Parmesan, the Italian hero and the 40 Eats-worthy roasted cauliflower sandwich, plus a monthly rotating special that Isabella plans to use as a showcase for regional sandwiches matched to the Nats' opponent.

"We might play around with some pretzel rolls when New York comes into town," Isabella said. Lamb chili and peanut brittle are also on the menu.

Isabella said the ballpark deal came about when the park's food and beverage director came to the G Sandwich pop-up at Graffiato last year.

"It was kind of a joint venture," Isabella said. "I said, 'I’d love to be in the stadium.' They said, 'We’d love to have you in the stadium.' They came in a couple of times to sample the sandwiches ... they thought it was a great fit."

Outside the ballpark, Isabella said he estimates a June opening for Richmond's Graffiato; Kapnos Taverna, at 4000 Wilson Blvd., isn't expected to open until fall. And while it's easy to duplicate G -- "The sandwiches are tested and ready to rock and roll," he said -- Isabella will be behind the counter for the entirety of opening weekend. "I'm a big time Nats fan," he said.

Expect the sandwiches to be ready in time for the Nationals' March 29 exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers; the regular season home opener comes April 4 vs. Atlanta.

Correction: The G Sandwich menu at Nationals Park will include four sandwiches plus a monthly rotating special, not three.
