Soupergirl to open in downtown D.C.

Downtown Washington's liquid assets improve in mid-May, when Soupergirl opens a tidy takeout on M Street NW.

"It has come to our attention that the hungry citizens of downtown D.C. need healthful, delicious soup and salad. We are heeding that call!" says Sara Polon, the daughter half of the Soupergirl duo that includes her recipe-maven mom, Marilyn. The food is vegan and kosher-certified.

The 750-square-foot downtown spot, a former Yo-Cake, will not have seating. But it will sport a counter window and offer a wider variety of soups (five that change daily) than the Takoma store, Polon says, as well as green salads, grain salads, catering and delivery. The timing's on point to share Soupergirl's four popular gazpachos: watermelon, beet, tomato and peach.

The business began as a Web-based ordering system in 2008; their Takoma neighborhood store opened in 2011. Soupergirl products are sold in Whole Foods Markets, in eight Sweetgreen locations in the area and at the Dupont Circle FreshFarm Market on Sundays. Polon says this is the first of what she hopes will be several retail Soupergirl shops around Washington.

Soupergirl, 1829 M St. NW. 202-609-7177. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open date, as of this posting: May 12.
