Meats & Foods, the bricks-and-mortar home of 13th Street Meats, opens with sausages and beers

To find 13th Street Meats' new retail location, you'll have to look some 10 blocks east:  Meats & Foods has opened near the corner of Florida Avenue and Third Street NW, betraying its namesake. No matter: You'll want to go the distance for these sausages.

You may have tried a 13th Street Meats sausage before -- they've been available at places like American Ice Company and Breadsoda. But there's a laid-back charm to this sparse new neighborhood spot, which boasts only a few seats and murals by Kelly Towles and Patrick Owens.

For $6, you can get your choice of sausage, including a half-smoke, lemon-basil chicken, spicy chorizo, veggie dog or bratwurst, among others. Add-ons include chili ($1), cheese and a Gordy's pickle (both 50 cents). Beers by the can include Natty Boh and DC Brau. You can also buy sausages to cook at home on your own grill. As football season approaches, there's talk of the shop preparing tailgating packages of sausage and fixings. Until then, stop in for a budget dinner

We tried the chorizo, lemon-basil chicken and half-smoke sausages, and found it hard to pick a favorite. Meats & Foods won't offer Ben's Chili Bowl any late-night sausage competition -- it's only open Wednesday-Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. -- but the newcomer's half-smoke could give the D.C. institution a run for its money.
