Understanding just who the man is, or might be, and why he would be getting contributions, takes patience.
The man calls himself Dorian S. Nakamoto. The alias used by the creator of the virtual currency is Satoshi Nakamoto. Last week Newsweek claimed that Dorian and Satoshi Nakamoto are the same person. Following the report, news organizations descended on Dorian Nakamoto, even as he denied he was the creator of Bitcoin.
More than 1,800 payments have been sent to a Bitcoin wallet address set up by Andreas Antonopoulos, chief security officer for the popular Bitcoin wallet service, Blockchain.info.
So why are people sending him money?
“If this person is Satoshi, then the funds are a small “thanks” and won’t make much of a difference. However, if this person is not Satoshi, then these funds will serve as a ‘sorry for what happened to you,’” Antonopoulos wrote on Reddit.
Antonopoulos will convert the donations to dollars and plans to deliver them to Nakamoto at the end of March.
