Lady Gaga’s never been one to flock to anything you’d call normal, but her medium for intrigue has shifted.
The woman who once performed dressed in a side of beef spent her stage time at the SXSW music festival cloaked in vomit.
After taping a segment on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in one of her trademark strange getups, a Gareth Pugh dress made of coffee filters, Gaga stripped to a black bikini. She began her show with a woman eating sausages on stage – Gaga was performing at Stubb’s BBQ. But then, she invited her friend and collaborator Millie Brown, who calls herself a “vomit painter,” onstage with her. Buzzfeed describes Brown’s work as “kind of like Jackson Pollack, but with vomited milk.” Brown drank a bottle of neon-colored milk, which she regurgitated onto Gaga as they both rode a mechanical pig while Gaga sang her song, “Swine.”
Brown has worked with Gaga before, appearing in video that played during Gaga’s Monster Ball tour, where she vomits on a white dress while Gaga is wearing it.
Gaga’s known for the outrageous, but it’s possible that she also wanted to pivot attention away from the controversy surrounding her “Born This Way Foundation.”
Gaga’s show, sponsored by Doritos, was a benefit for her foundation. The singer has been under scrutiny since it was revealed Born This Way only spent $5,000 of its $2.1 million assets on charity. Cynthia Germanotta, Lady Gaga’s mother, defended the “Born This Way” singer in a piece for Huffington Post. “We are not a grant-maker that funds the work of other charities, and were never intended to be,” Germanotta said. Showbiz411 initially reported the breakdown of foundation expenses, including $300,000 on “strategic consulting,” $62,836 on “stage productions” and $50,000 on “social media.”
