Did Lupita tank on fashion’s biggest night?

Well, it was … something.

Maybe there is a such a thing as being too adventurous.

The Met Gala is famous for challenging its attendees to rise to the occasion in a unique way: Unlike any of the televised awards shows, the entire point of the night is purely fashion, not sending subtle cues about what your next role should be, or dressing to look like the Oscar statue when you’re campaigning for one. It is fashion for the sake of art. Participants are encouraged to experiment.

And experiment they did. Monday night’s fundraiser for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was the source of a few surprises, though by far, the celebrity who emerged with the most egg on her face was Lupita Nyong’o. She had so much further to fall, having been heralded as a red-carpet goddess who could commit few, if any, fashion sins. Then came Monday night’s feathered flapper number from Prada, and we all realized that she is, in fact, human.

Take it away, Twitter:
