For nearly $3,000 per month, you can rent Whitey Bulger’s old apartment

Presumably, the hidey hole in the drywall for stashing money and guns has been patched up.

One would hope, considering that the owner of the Santa Monica, Calif., building where James “Whitey” Bulger and longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig lived until they were captured by the feds in 2011 is asking for more than double what its former criminal occupants were paying. Unit 303 of the Princess Eugenia is officially available for rent; the Hollywood Reporter says it’s going for $2,950. Curbed Los Angeles has the price at $2,972.

Either way, you’re getting gouged. Bulger and Greig paid $1,145 for 1,100 square feet, and it was rent-controlled.

Imagine the Craigslist ad:

For rent: 2BR, steps to the Pacific Ocean, on 3rd between Washington and California Aves. Fireplace, dishwasher, electric stove, wall-to-wall carpet. It ain’t much, but Whitey Bulger lived here, which means you’ll always have something to talk about at cocktail parties. Tree-lined street. You pay utilities. No pets or gangsters on the lam, please. Must have credit report, valid photo ID, and willingness to submit to background check.

The building itself is plain white stucco typical of southern California and not at all far from Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade. Just the place where you’d want to keep $800,000 in cash and 30 guns.

From the photos on Curbed, it looks like the owners have given the place a fresh coat of paint, but it’s not all that different from the pictures released by the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Bulger, a former occupant of the FBI’s Most Wanted list and Boston mobster connected with 19 murders, was captured in 2011 after agents spread pictures of him throughout social media and television and someone tipped them off.

It seems apartment 303 may become the stuff of Hollywood legend. There’s a biopic about the Boston crime boss starring Johnny Depp called “Black Mass” already in the works. The pictures of Depp from set are pretty freakish.

Even if Bulger, who was 81 when he was nabbed, happened to leave something hidden in the apartment that hasn’t already been found, you probably won’t have to worry about him coming after it. He’s serving two life sentences plus five years.
