American Shani Davis, 31, won’t win a medal in his signature event, the 1,000 meters, at the Sochi Olympics.

Davis, 31, was attempting to make history as the first male speedskater to win the same event at three consecutive Olympics. But his time, 1 minute 9.12 seconds, was no better than seventh with four skaters remaining.

Dutch record-holder Stefan Groothuis, a six-time national champion, held the lead with 1:08.39.
