Happy spring: A big chunk of the country is under a freeze warning

That big mass of dark purple? Those are freeze warnings. (National Weather Service map as of 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday)

Reminder: It’s April 15 — nearly a month into spring — and a swath of the country from New York to Oklahoma is currently under a freeze warning. Also, parts of Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin have winter weather advisories or winter storm warnings.

Following a brief, tantalizing glimpse of spring, the East Coast now faces a nasty return to winter because of an exceptionally strong cold front, reports the Capital Weather Gang’s Jason Samenow. The National Weather Service says there’s a risk of “heavy snow” over parts of the upper Great Lakes, naturally.

This cold front already dropped snow on Denver and Chicago this week, while the temperature in Sioux Falls, S.D., dropped to 12 degrees on Tuesday morning, because spring is a lie your parents told you to get you to do your chores.
