Making his first appearance in front of the cameras since his mugshot went viral, convicted felon Jeremy Meeks wore a bright orange jumpsuit, handcuffs and a stone-serious expression.
Meeks, who was arrested last month during a gang sweep in Stockton, Calif., faced multiple felony weapons charges. But during a brief court appearance in Stockton on Tuesday, the state agreed to turn the case — and Meeks — over to federal prosecutors, according to Sacramento’s KXTV. He is now in federal custody, the station reported, facing a single charge: “Felon in possession of a firearm.”
That one charge could lead to a prison term of 10 years and a fine of $250,000. San Joaquin County District Attorney spokesman Robert Himelblau said federal gun charges lead to longer prison sentences.
Importantly, KXTV added: “In the federal legal system, pictures and video are not permitted.”
The felon’s mugshot became a cultural sensation upon being posted to the Stockton Police Department’s Facebook page last month: It went viral, launching a “hot mugshot guy”/”hot felon” meme and a thousand think pieces. Reportedly, it also helped Meeks (who may or may not have “model good looks”) land two Hollywood agents.
