Wasserman Schultz denies comment on Israeli ambassador

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Tuesday denied saying she had heard Israel's ambassador describe Republican allegations that Democrats don't support Israel as "dangerous for Israel."

But the Washington Examiner's Beltway Confidential blog has posted audio of her apparently saying it.

The Examiner had reported that Wasserman Schultz, speaking Monday at a training session hosted by the Obama campaign's Jewish outreach arm, said: "We know, and I’ve heard no less than Ambassador Michael Oren say this, that what the Republicans are doing is dangerous for Israel.”

Tuesday on Fox News, Wasserman Schultz was asked about her  comment and informed that Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, denied saying such a thing. Wasserman Schultz said: "I didn't say he said that. And unfortunately, that comment was reported by a conservative newspaper. Not surprising that they would deliberately misquote me."

The Beltway Confidential blog then posted audio of what sounds like Wasserman Schultz saying, “We know, and I’ve heard no less than Ambassador Michael Oren say this, that what the Republicans are doing is dangerous for Israel. They are undermining Israel's security by suggesting that the United States and Israel don't have anything other than a unique and close and special relationship."

Wasserman Schultz told Fox that she was referring not to specific Republican policies, but to the GOP charge that the Obama White House is not a friend of Israel.

"Unfortunately, the Republicans have made Israel a political football, which is dangerous for Israel," Wasserman Schultz told Fox. "And Ambassador Oren has said that we can't ever suggest that there is any daylight between the two parties on Israel, because there isn't, and that that's harmful to Israel. That's what I said, and that is accurate."
