Ryan aide: Time used ‘poor judgement’ in publishing workout photos

An aide to Paul Ryan told CNN that Time magazine used "poor judgement" in publishing workout photos of the congressman the day of the vice presidential debate.

The photos show Ryan in gym clothes, lifting weights and posing for the camera.

"To release these photos on the same day when important issues are to be discussed is, in my view, poor judgment," the aide said. He added that advisers to Ryan had been assured that the photos — taken when the lawmaker was in the running for the magazine's "Person of the Year" feature — would never be published.

TIME Managing Editor Rick Stengel disputed that account in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Thursday afternoon.

"We had discussions with them about using them back and forth and there was never an understanding that they would not be used," Stengel said. He added that the timing was "appropriate" because Ryan "is in the news right now and we are in the news business."
