Michael Bennet to serve as DSCC chairman

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) will serve as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for the 2014 cycle, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Tuesday.

Guy Cecil, who was Bennet's chief of staff for 2009 and much of 2010, will continue as DSCC executive director

“Michael is one of the brightest rising stars in the Democratic Party, and he is exactly the right person to lead our efforts over the next two years,” said Reid in a statement. “Not only does Michael know how to win tough races, he has the trust and loyalty of the entire Democratic caucus behind him.”

Bennett turned down the DSCC chairmanship in 2010. His fundraising prowess and his victory in a very bad year for Democrats made him an attractive candidate at the time. But the senator, who has three young children, was just coming out of a bruising campaign. The chairmanship ultimately went to Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), who led the committee as Democrats picked up two Senate seats in 2012.

“This will not be an easy job, but I feel strongly that families and small businesses in my state have a lot riding on our success,” Bennet said.

Murray weighed in too, alluding to the challenge the DSCC faces with the 2014 map. "There is no question that, like everyone who takes on this job, Michael faces a difficult task ahead," she said. "But I'm confident that with the support of his staff, led by the incredibly capable Guy Cecil, we will run competitive and well-funded races all across the country in 2014."
