Massachusetts Senate vacancy to be filled this morning

Updated at 10:03 a.m.: The appointee will be Mo Cowan, according to a Democrat with knowledge of Patrick's plans.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick's (D) schedule says he will make an announcement at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The announcement appears as though it will be Patrick's pick for a temporary appointee to fill John Kerry's (D-Mass.) Senate seat -- especially given that Kerry was confirmed as secretary of state on Tuesday and given that the announcement will be live-streamed.

Some media have reported that the announcement will indeed be Patrick's appointee.

Among the candidates thought to be in the mix for the appointment are former congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.); Vicki Kennedy, the widow of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy; businesswoman Carol Fulp and Mo Cowan, Patrick's former chief of staff.

Patrick appears likely to pick a placeholder over either Rep. Ed Markey (D) or Rep. Stephen Lynch (D), who are both set to run in the looming special election for the seat.
