Early reactors

Call them the Early Reactors Caucus.

There are plenty of lawmakers who send out embargoed reactions to the State of the Union before the speech is finished, and then there are those who go a step further and actually leave the speech early to meet the press.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) was out in Statuary Hall, where reporters and TV cameras gather, very early in tonight's speech, though he left after a brief appearance.

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) also came out well before the speech ended and began recording interviews.

"I've done about 25 of these, man," McDermott said when asked why he came out early. "I know what a wild rodeo this is in here in about 20 minutes."
