McConnell to oppose Brennan nomination

It took almost 12 hours, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) came to the Senate floor late Wednesday to voice support for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and his hours-long filibuster of John Brennan's nomination to lead the CIA.

In doing so, McConnell urged his colleagues to vote against cloture, or ending debate on the Brennan nomination.

"It is my view that cloture should not be invoked," McConnell said. "This is a controversial nominee. Should cloture be invoked, I intend to oppose the nomination and congratulate my colleague from Kentucky for this extraordinary effort."

Whether McConnell planned to vote against Brennan's nomination before Paul began his filibuster is unclear. What is clear is that Paul's ongoing filibuster forced the Senate Republican leader to come to the Senate floor and voice support for his Bluegrass State colleague.

McConnell voted to confirm John F. Kerry as President Obama's secretary of state, but joined with dozens of Senate Republicans in voting against Chuck Hagel to lead the Pentagon.
