Rep. Joe Kennedy III launches political action committee

Freshman Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) is launching a new leadership PAC -- a significant step toward raising his profile on Capitol Hill and nationally.

A filing from the Federal Election Commission shows a new PAC called "4MA PAC" was launched early this week, with Kennedy listed as the PAC's sponsor.

The nephew of former senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and son of former congressman Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) proved a strong fundraiser in his first campaign, pulling in more than $4 million despite facing little in the way of opposition.

Launching a leadership PAC will allow Kennedy to raise money in bigger chunks and let him use the funds for political purposes outside the purview of his 2014 reelection campaign.

Many members of the House and Senate have leadership PACs, but the vast majority don't raise much money. Just how much Kennedy can rake in for his PAC should say a lot about his political rise.
