Tim Scott endorses Mark Sanford

Another big-name Republican is throwing his weight behind former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford's House campaign.

Sen. Tim Scott said voters face "a stark choice," and that Sanford "merits support."

“On all the most important issues facing our state and country, from dealing with our dangerous levels of debt, to repealing or resisting the government health-care takeover, to standing up for Charleston jobs against the NLRB, 1st District voters have a stark choice,” Scott said in a statement to The Post and Courier. “Mark Sanford is hands down better on all of those issues, and that’s why I believe he merits support.”

Until January, Scott represented the 1st district in the House, giving his endorsement extra significance. The popular conservative was appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to finish out Jim DeMint's Senate term, setting up next Tuesday's special election. Sanford faces Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch in a Republican district made competitive because of his baggage as a candidate.

The National Republican Congressional Committee bowed out of the race after a trespassing complaint filed against Sanford by his ex-wife came to light. But Republican heavyweights are coming to his aid. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also endorsed Sanford on Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and FreedomWorks endorsed him Tuesday, and Haley is appearing at a fundraiser for the candidate tonight.
