Tom Tancredo considering bid for Colorado governor

Former congressman Tom Tancredo may launch another bid for governor of Colorado in 2014, setting up a rematch with Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Tancredo ran as a third-party candidate in 2010, getting into the race on the American Constitution Party ticket just three months before the election. He finished far ahead of Republican nominee Dan Maes but lost to Hickenlooper by 15 points. Tancredo has since returned to the GOP.

The Denver Post first reported that Tancredo is "seriously considering" a bid. He confirmed his interest to the Washington Post but said "the word 'seriously' may be too strong."

A hardliner on illegal immigration, Tancredo represented the state's 6th district from 1999 to 2009. He ran for president in 2008 but dropped out of the race early on and supported Mitt Romney.

No major Republican candidate has gotten into the race against Hickenlooper, who likely will be difficult to unseat. A September Denver Post poll put his approval rating at 60 percent. A more recent poll from the automated Democratic firm Public Policy Polling put him at 53 percent, suggesting his work on gun controls and civil unions had cost him some support. That poll gave the governor a 52 percent to 41 percent lead over Tancredo, similar to other Republican names tested.
