Bobby Schilling running for old seat

Former congressman Bobby Schilling (R) will attempt to reclaim his Illinois seat in a rematch against Rep. Cheri Bustos (D), who defeated him in 2012.

"Incumbent Congresswoman Bustos has proven during her time in Washington that she doesn't understand or feel the pain of middle class families," Schilling said in a statement. "We need a true representative fighting for us in Washington and incumbent Congresswoman Cheri Bustos has refused to act.”

Schilling was elected in the 2010 GOP wave, the first Republican elected to represent the Quad Cities' 17th district in almost 30 years. Under Democratic-controlled redistricting, his seat was redrawn in 2011 to give Democrats a larger edge.  Initially aligned with the tea party, toward the end of his term Schilling emphasized his efforts to work with Democrats.

Bustos is part of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's "Frontline" program, which helps vulnerable lawmakers with fundraising and outreach.

"Congresswoman Bustos is focused like a laser on job creation, protecting Medicare and Social Security, and serving the people of Illinois' 17th Congressional District, not an election that is over a year away," said spokesman Colin Milligan.
