House candidate comes out to father … as a liberal

Massachusetts special election candidate and state Rep. Carl Sciortino (D) is out with one of the more interesting campaign ads we've seen in a while.

The ad features cutaways between Sciortino and his father, a self-proclaimed tea party supporter, in which Sciortino talks about coming out to his dad -- as a "Massachusetts liberal." (Unspoken but understood: Sciortino also is openly gay.)

Sciortino is one of several candidates running in the special election to replace Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who recently won the special election for Secretary of State John Kerry's old Senate seat.

If he joined Congress, Sciortino would become the seventh openly gay member of the House. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) this year became the first openly gay senator.
