Newark Mayor Cory Booker's father died Thursday at age 76, the Democrat's Senate campaign said.

"Newark Mayor Cory Booker's father, Cary Booker, 76, who recently suffered a stroke, passed away today in Las Vegas," the Booker campaign said in a statement. "Today's remaining campaign events have been canceled."

Cary Booker had been battling Parkinson's disease.

Cory Booker, 44, is running for the Senate seat held by the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D). He is the front-runner against Republican Steve Lonegan. New Jersey voters will head to the polls next Wednesday.
