New Begich TV ad features footage of late father

Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) released a new television ad Thursday that emphasizes his Alaska roots and includes footage of his late father, a congressman who died in a plane accident decades ago.

Begich is the son of Nick Begich, a Democratic congressman who died after his plane went missing in 1972.

"We've lost too many Alaskans this way," says Begich's wife, who narrates the ad. "But Mark is clearly his father's son. And there's nowhere he won't go to listen and stand up for Alaskans."

The Begich commercial also appears to be an early attempt to draw a contrast with former attorney general Dan Sullivan, the senator's leading Republican opponent. Sullivan is originally from Ohio and moved to Alaska mid-career.

The ad was produced by veteran Democratic media strategist Mark Putnam.

Sean Sullivan has covered national politics for The Washington Post since 2012.
