Blair’s Kerry Madden throws no-hitter

Blair sophomore Kerry Madden threw a no-hitter Wednesday in her team’s 16-0 rout of Einstein.

“I wasn’t really conscious of it; I was just pitching,” said Madden over the phone. “We had a meeting after the game and my coach just said ‘in case you guys didn’t notice Kerry had a no-hitter,’ but I really didn’t realize it until then.”

Einstein scored 10 runs on Watkins Mill in its last game.

As a freshman, Madden saw limited action on varsity behind Samantha Schweikhardt, a walk-on pitcher at Maryland who managed to throw a perfect game last year.

“She was such a great role model and player,” said Madden. “To have this happen in only our second game is great because I can work hard and keep this going.”

“Believe it or not, I thought she got off to a little bit of a slow start, but she managed to pitch her way out of it perfectly,” said Blair Coach Louis Hoelman, who has held the position for 13 years. “She doesn’t have much high school pitching experience, so I just think that she has bundles of upside. She can be one of the best pitchers in the county.”

Madden, who plays for the Takoma Fire during the summer, has yet to receive any attention from college softball programs. “I’m just a sophomore, so I haven’t really looked into colleges quite yet,” said Madden. “It would be cool to play in college, so that is definitely something I plan on getting started on this summer.”

Madden could not have asked for a better start to the season with twelve strikeouts in ten innings, but she will be faced with a demanding schedule. A matchup with No. 4 Sherwood next Thursday will be one of Madden’s many challenges over the next month as Blair has more than two days off in between games only once.
