Maryland Private School basketball tournament field set

D.J. Harvey and DeMatha will compete in the first annual Maryland Private Schools Tournament (Doug Kapustin/The Washington Post).

Twelve of the top Maryland boys’ basketball teams will assemble next week for the first annual Maryland Private School Tournament.

The brackets were released this week by tournament director Keith Veney, a McNamara alumnus. Veney attempted to organize a similar event last year before being forced to cancel due to a lack of teams.

“I want to bring a March Madness feel to Maryland and give private schools a chance to play,” said Veney, who has trained several NBA players under his Shot Doc Nation organization. “I went to a WCAC school and we didn’t really get to chance to play any Maryland private schools outside of our conference. You always wonder who would beat who if they played, so this gives everybody a chance to compete on a level playing field.”

The inaugural field includes No. 1 Bullis, No. 4 DeMatha, No. 8 Riverdale Baptist, No. 14 Clinton Christian, No. 18 Capitol Christian, Annapolis Area Christian, Good Counsel, McNamara, Mount Carmel, Spalding, St. Mary’s Ryken and Takoma Academy.

The first two rounds of games will take place Tuesday and Thursday at McNamara and Riverdale Baptist, followed by the semifinals and final at DeMatha on March 8 and 9, respectively.

Veney said he plans to add a girls’ bracket next year in hopes of giving more teams a chance to vie for another title against other top competition in the state.
