Did 33 couples just get married at the Grammys?

It was a Grammy moment calculated to trump all Grammy moments, teased out for an entire day on Twitter and then three hours of live television. Nearly three-dozen couples — billed as gay, straight and of mixed ethnic backgrounds  — got hitched at the Staples Center during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s performance of their Grammy-nominated gay-rights anthem “Same Love.”  Mazel tov!

But you didn’t hear wrong: Queen Latifah announced that 33 couples would be wed in the ceremony, rather than 34, as had been reported. What happened to the final duo? Cold feet? The Internet wants to know. Billing the stunt as a statement about equality, the show’s producer and the rap duo arranged for the mass wedding to take place during the Grammy telecast, The New York Times first reported. Macklemore and Lewis were joined by singer Mary Lambert for the rather sentimental performance of “Same Love,” before a set that made out the grand arches of a church in white neon light behind them.  “When we say music has the power to bring people together, we mean it,” Queen Latifah offered in her introduction for the performance. As the song came to its end, Queen Latifah re-emerged and swiftly addressed the couples who were in the audience  waiting to be betrothed. Just after the couples exchanged rings, Madonna arrived, dressed in white, to warble a few lines of her classic “Open Your Heart.” As some of the couples teared up, the audience offered a standing ovation meant for all.
