Terps basketball to take foreign tour to Bahamas, host Tulsa next season

With a late-November trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands already booked for the Paradise Jam tournament, the Maryland men’s basketball team has since scheduled another Caribbean trip. In early August, the Terrapins will take a six-day foreign tour to the Bahamas, an individual with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

The news come on the heels of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge announcement, which paired Maryland at Ohio State on Dec. 4.

In addition to the expected exhibition games against local teams in the Bahamas, the trip will also offer rising sophomore center Shaquille Cleare a chance to return home to his native country. Pursuant to NCAA rules, teams may take foreign tours once every four years.

According to the individual, Maryland will also host Tulsa over winter break in College Park for a non-conference matchup. Tulsa’s coach, Danny Manning, played with Coach Mark Turgeon at Kansas in the mid-1980s.

The Golden Hurricane went 17-16 last season with an 8-8 record in Conference USA, finishing with an RPI of 123. They return their top two scorers in Rashad Smith (14.5 ppg) and James Woodard (12.0 ppg), and went 2-7 against the RPI top 100 in 2012-13. Both wins came against Texas El-Paso. Tulsa and Maryland share zero common opponents.

(NOTE: Mixed up the nicknames. It’s since been fixed. My bad.)

Given this, here’s how Maryland’s 2013-14 hoops schedule is shaking out so far. Per the individual, the Terps won’t have anymore road or neutral site games after the six already booked, so the open spots will be filled by matchups at Comcast Center.
