Democrat Steve Bullock wins Montana governor’s race

Attorney General Steve Bullock (D) won the Montana governor's race on Wednesday, defeating former congressman Rick Hill (R) in one of the cycle most's competitive statewide contests.

With 94 percent of precincts reporting, Bullock led 49 percent to 47 percent. The Associated Press has called the race for the Democrat.

Bullock's win also is a victory for the Democratic Governors Association. Democrats were defending 8 of the 11 gubernatorial seats up for grabs on Tuesday and the most competitive states on the map. While Republicans picked up North Carolina, Democrats held New Hampshire and Montana, and appeared headed toward a third hold in Washington, though the race there remained in doubt Wednesday afternoon.

Bullock will succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer.

“Montanans have placed their faith in Steve’s strong leadership, and know that he’ll build on Governor Schweitzer’s legacy of strong fiscal management and job creation, helping to continue moving Montana forward," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said in a statement.
