The state of the states on same-sex marriage, in 1 map

A federal judge's ruling Wednesday that Texas' ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional comes amid a slew of judicial and electoral successes for backers of gay marriage. It also represents movement in the direction of gay marriage proponents in one of the largest -- and most conservative -- states in the country.

The pace at which the fight over marriage is moving combined with the number of states in which the fight is happening makes it hard to keep track of everything. That's where this terrific WaPo map comes in.

Bottom line: As of today, there are 33 states where gay marriage is banned, 16 states and the District of Columbia) that allow same sex marriage and 10 that recognize civil unions and/or other same sex partnerships.
