By now, you’ve heard the news that Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) could very well be the next House majority leader. But did you know that the would-be GOP leader won the lottery when he was 19?

Back in 2005, then-state Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy spoke to California students about his unlikely path into state government—and he spilled a couple of little-known facts about himself. He said he won $5,000 on one (of the two) scratch-off tickets he bought at the Food Town market in Bakersfield, Calif.

Here are the three other fun facts you didn’t know about the congressman.
