That time Angela Merkel posed post-game with the German team at the World Cup

The Germans delivered a convincing statement about their intentions at the 2014 World Cup, pummeling an out-gunned Portugal side 4-0 on Monday in Brazil.

In the immediate aftermath of the win, literally, came German Chancellor Angela Merkel.  That's Merkel -- resplendent in red -- in the midst of the German team as they cool down (I mean, multiple dudes are shirtless) in the locker room post-match. (The person to Merkel's immediate left is Bastian Schweinsteiger aka the man with the most German-sounding name in the universe.)

The photo was tweeted by Steffen Seibert, a "spokesman for the federal government and head of the Federal Press Office", according to his Twitter handle.  And, it translates (thank you Google!) this way: "Congratulations - perfect start to the tournament!"

Merkel has said she is "not an expert"about soccer but that she does "follow World Cups and European Championships more closely." And, she occasionally uses soccer as a metaphor for governing. "In the German football team players from different clubs need to get on with each other both on and off the pitch,"  she said in an interview in 2006. "In the grand coalition Christian Democrats and Social Democrats sit in the same boat and need to pull in the same direction."

And, just because we can get enough of photos of Merkel with the soccer stars, here's a selfie she and German striker Lukas Podolski took post-game.
