Does Michael Brown’s alleged robbery of a liquor store matter?

Last week, the Ferguson, Missouri police department released a video that appears to show police-shooting victim Michael Brown robbing a liquor store.  Over at Popehat, Ken White has a helpful post explaining the ways in which this alleged robbery does and does not matter legally (mostly not), and why it likely does (but shouldn’t) matter practically.
