Maura Mahoney, 36, who grew up in the Washington area and became a special education teacher in Westerville, Ohio, died Dec. 11 of lung cancer at a hospice in Columbus, Ohio.
Mrs. Mahoney taught special education at schools in Richmond and Tampa before moving to Westerville around 2005.
At Westerville Central High School, she was a co-adviser of the student literary arts magazine.
Maura Hanrahan was born in Washington and raised in the Alexandria part of Fairfax County. She was a 1992 graduate of West Potomac High School in Fairfax County and received a bachelor’s degree in education from East Carolina University in 1996.
At the time of her death, she was working toward a master’s degree in education at Otterbein University in Westerville.
Her marriage to Timothy Mahoney ended in divorce.
Survivors include two daughters, Maeve Mahoney and Bridget Mahoney, both of Westerville; her father, Charles Hanrahan of Fairfax County; two sisters, Meaghan Dobson of Fairfax County and Colleen Hanrahan of Alexandria; and a brother, Matt Hanrahan of Alexandria.
