Gladys Reed, speech therapist

Gladys Reed, 91, a Fairfax County public schools speech therapist who became the school system’s administrator for speech and hearing, died Jan. 2 at Goodwin House Baileys Crossroads, a retirement community in Falls Church. She had had a stroke.

Mrs. Reed worked for Fairfax County schools for about 15 years before retiring in the early 1980s.

Gladys Ekeberg was born in Dayton, Iowa, and graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. She received a master’s degree in speech and hearing from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Early in her career, she taught in Gary, Ind., was dean of women at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and taught speech and hearing at Kansas State University.

She moved from Fairfax to Goodwin House about three years ago. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Alexandria.

Her husband, Charles E. Reed, whom she married in 1952, died in 1996.

Survivors include two children, Sandra Reed-Bryant of Fairfax County and Mark A. Reed of Virginia Beach; a sister; and two grandchildren.
